
Its name derives from the fact that in the best-known version of this sundial, the route of the pearl in both tropics traced two lines that resembled the hood worn by the Capuchin monks. Its origin dates back to the 15th century, although it cannot be specified with certainty.
It is a local type of height quadrant, the so-called "clinometers".
